Pipe Sergeant Ron Husted of the MacKenzie Highlanders
(pictured with a Russian soldier re-enactor)
was appointed to play the pipes at the Elbe River Bridge Commemoration Event in
Newton, Iowa,
on April 25th, 2010.

His uniform chosen for this unique milestone re-enactment was the
khaki kilt tunic
of the WWII Scottish Highland Divisions.
Nearly 250 residents turned out for the performance to honor area veterans and remember
the historic moment of WWII.

The highlight of the event was a portrayal of the historic link-up of
American and Russian troops on an Elbe River Bridge,
cutting the Nazi war machine in half and marking the beginning of the end for Germany.

Attending the commemoration was Dmitry Vetrov,
Counselor for the Embassy of Russia to the United States,
who expressed greetings from the
Commissioner on Veteran Affaires of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
